The Canon BG-E3 Vertical Battery Grip is an accessory for the Canon EOS 350D and 400D SLR cameras. It serves three purposes:
1) it allows two batteries to be installed for extended shooting sessions
2) it provides a vertical shutter release
3) it provides for a better grip for some people
Accepts one or two NB-2LH batteries, six AA batteries or DR-700 Coupler.
The BG-E3 battery grip was designed for the EOS 350D but is also compatible with the 400D and offers the double advantage of extra power and better handling for your digital camera. The grip can hold two NB-2L or NB-2LH batteries for a notably longer battery life.The vertical shutter release makes shooting with the camera in a vertical position just as comfortable as shooting horizontally.
The following functions are available in the vertical shooting position. Shutter, Main Dial, AF Point Selection, AF/FE Lock, and AV +/-.

The canon BG-E3 for the Canon 350/400D almost doubles your battery holding two batteries side by side, however the grib does provide a body extention allowing to sread your fingers out a little affording you a better more comfortable grip in both landscape and portraite views. In the portraite posision there is an extra shutter release making life much more comfortable as it's in a more natural posision rather than reaching accross the top of the camera. As well as the shutter release you alse o have the small scroll wheel and two adjustment buttons.
The grip simply screws into the the tripod mount with the single battery cover removed and placed in the storage area there's no worries about losing it. The grip really comes into it's own when using long lenses as with the extra area to hold on to your hand is under less strain thus making for a more comfortable grip and giving you greater control over your chosen lens.
Downsides.
Adds extra weight.
Camera feels more bulky at first.

Easier for portraite photography

I purchased this not long after getting my 350D and I'm sure glad I did! 
The BG-E3 grip really transforms the feel of the camera adding a balance that is missing from the camera on it's own due to it's small size, with portrait style shooting now becoming a breeze due to the extra controls. Battery life with these cameras is allready good, but adding the grip now double's it when you purchase an extra battery (it can be used with just 1 battery btw.). It also give you the option of using regular AA batteries instead of the camera batteries, this is really worthwhile for those of us who spend a long time out shooting away from a plug.
If you think your camera is a bit on the small size then I would go as far to say that this is an essential purchase for you, get out there and get one

I have small hands, and until I got this grip, I thought the Rebel XT fit perfectly. Looking back, I'll admit I was completely wrong. Even a perfect fit horizontally doesn't give you a perfect fit vertically. The XT has no vertical shutter.
I considered the Opteka grip and some of the other non-canon versions. Those are apparently a crap shoot. Some are great, others faulty right out of the box. The Canon grip has been nothing but good for me. I have yet to run out of battery during a shoot. You'll be more likely to run out of storage on your CF card than you will battery.
The AA holder was a nice touch, but I doubt I'll ever make use of it.
The only thing I can see that Canon could do to improve on their battery grip would be to maybe offer the same color combinations as the Rebels. Yeah, that's not much they can do to improve now is it!
