This review is based on my Photographic skills / knowledge being classed as intermediate in my eyes.
Previous to the D70 I had a Canon 300D. Differences I found immediately were the Nikon felt a much sturdier, better built piece of kit. The layout of controls, information from the LCD screen on the top & back, made me feel this was a more proffesional bit of kit. SO much so, that at first it felt a bit daunting after the 300D.
It didn't take long to get into the swing of things with the D70 & after a couple of years I still haven't utuilsed all of it's functionality to the max. In other words, I cannot justify an upgarde with my current skills & lifestyle.
I have upgraded the firmware to D70s level, which was straight forward to complete.
The camera has never let me down, has good battery life & to be honest I cannot see me replacing it for quite a while 
I have listed the new price for the body only, at the time I bought mine s/h, for reference.

I've had mine a year os so now. I use it for all sorts, but mostly for motorsport - for which I have Sigma 120-300 2.8. Its a pretty great combo imo.
See above for the pros and cons.
I would however like to upgrade to a D200 or even a D2X for faster AF and higher mp count.
Short of that, I am considerign a 2nd D70, as I hate changing lenses in the field.
Overall, I rate this camera very highly.

I owned this camera for nearly 2 years before I upgraded to the D200. I paid £799 with kit lense, a spare battery and a 1Gb CF card. It was my first fully featured DSLR - I upgraded from a Sony pocket-sized DSC-V1.
I really enjoyed my time with the D70, it was an excellent camera and I was sorry to see it go (but at least it was sold to a friend who will do it justice).
Good points - vibrant images, matrix metering, excellent kit lense (18-70 DX), battery life, fast focusing.
Bad points - ISO not as adjustable as I would have liked, some functions hidden away in menus, white balance would not always be accurate and not enough FPS for my liking.
Saying all that, I'd still buy another (when I can afford to) and use it as a second body, finances do not currrently allow me to
