Description: FLM CB38FT Ball Head (without QR platform)

New version The CB38FT is almost quarter the weight of some competing heads with the same load capacity. Now includes click-stop panoramic base.

Precision engineered by a small family-run company in Germany, the CB38FT is a very strong ball head without the usual weight penalty. As well as friction control and panoramic revolving base it also has the unique FLM Tilt function.

The Tilt function allows the ball to be locked in a single plane of movement. For example, by placing the neck of ball in the side slot and then locking the tilt control, the camera can be moved in a 90° arc.
Not supplied with camera platform. Choose from -

- FLM Basic Platform (plain cork padded).
- FLM Power Release (small size quick release).
- FLM Basis Release (clamp style release for larger loads)

Other makers' quick release adaptors with a 3/8" socket can also be attached to the screw.
The panoramic base can be turned freely, or by pressing the end of the Pan Stop knob, intents set at 30° can be located. Or the Pan Stop knob can be rotated clockwise to engage these indents as the base is turned. Includes a ball friction control.

Pros: Well made, all the bells and whistles, sturdy smooth.
Cons: May have too many controls for some. No rubber coated knobs

This is no where near as heavy as the more well known kit but is still sturdy and smooth to operate. This makes it ideal for a trecking tripod and for landscape use. But it's equally at home in a studio. It looks and feels well made and it's easy to set the friction. The main 2 knobs are large knurled and well weighted but some might like them to be rubber coated. In use I find them precise and accurate.
It's actually a 5 knob head which means it has a seperate control to detent the pan base for panoramas in 10 degree stages, if you want, as well as a pan lock. It also has a tilt lock; this is amazing as it means you have the option of locking the ball so it only tilts in one plane. It's easiest to think that you now have the option to turn the ball head into a 3 way head which is ideal for landscape photography.

Its rated at 10KG which in practice means it comfortably holds almost any digital SLR kit, for the 600f4 I might one day invest in the heavier CB58FT but this does hold it quite well. It comes without a base so you can add whatever QR system, you prefer.
In conclusion it pretty much does what a ball head is supposed to do with all my kit. The light weight means it is suited for todays carbon fibre legs and you have all the advantages of a three way head as well without the bulk.
