Description
The SC-29 Off Camera AF TTL Cord, which mounts to the camera's hot shoe, enables an attached SB-600 & SB-800 flash to accurately autofocus in low light when placed on a flash bracket, for beautiful shadowless lighting.
The cord in corporates a new AF Illuminator at the mounting point that overrides the Speedlite's AF Illuminator, completely eliminating any possibility of autofocus discrepancies when using the SB-800 off camera.
In addition, the SC-29 Off-Camera AF TTL Cord and the SB-800 Quick Recycling Battery Pack can be used as an off camera master controller in a Multi-Flash Set-up

Okay, I know what some of you are thinking; "Why on Earth would anyone use an off-camera cord when Nikon's wireless lighting system is so great/cool/easy??"
As good as wireless lighting is, it relies on several factors
a) You have the time and space to set up your remote lights
b) You have enough space in your kit bag for the remote strobes and triggers
c) You have permission to set up a light rig at the location you're shooting
If you're shooting in a situation where you might answer "no" to any of the above, then the best way to get the job done is with an off-camera TTL sync cord. Here's an example.

On September 6 in London, the UFC held a pre-fight press conference to field questions about UFC 75. I was just one of many members of the press jostling to get a few moments with the UFC staff and fighters after the press conference. Part of my brief was to get headshots of the key people, and UFC president Dana White was one of them.
The small room was packed with around sixty members of the press so there would have been no space whatsoever to set up a lighting rig. Furthermore, the drab brickwork and high grey ceiling meant that on-camera bounced flash was not an option. With the Nikon SC-29 TTL cord, I could still use off-camera flash quickly and easily.
Pressing my wife Claire into services as a mobile light stand, she held the flash just above each subject's eye level and at about 45 degrees left of the lens axis. Once I had dialed in the correct settings for the first subject, I could then quickly shoot each other key person in less than 20 seconds apiece - and I didn't have to set up or tear down any lightstands, brollies or other cumbersome equipment.
The SC-29 operates in such a manner that it's as if your strobe is still directly attached to the camera's hot shoe. The one bonus of the SC-29 is that it has an IR autofocus assist lamp built into it which overrides the lamp on your SB series flash, since it send and returns AF assist light along the same axis as your lens.
The one niggle that I've found with this cord is that (if you're not careful) the AF Assist switch can easily be bumped to be just a fraction shy of the desired setting when mounting the flash unit to the cord and, when this happens, your flash will refuse to fire at all. Other than that it works perfectly.
