Description: Using his own photographs to illustrate the text, Charlie Waite explains the basis of his success as a landscape photographer. From the choice of camera and lens to the subtleties of lighting and composition, from manipulating the image to extracting the essential elements of a scene, he brings his years of practical experience to bear on the subject. The book contains many practical tips for the budding landscape photographer, but technical mastery is only one part of the story. The author aims, above all, to instil in readers his own love of landscape, and to encourage them to respond to, and capture, the world around them. Charlie Waite's prize-winning books include "Landscape in Britain", "Landscape in France" and "Landscape in Italy".

Pros: Practical and timeless
Cons:

Why am I reviewing a book that is 15 years old? Simple.... it's by Charlie Waite, one of the landscape photographers I admire greatly. If you can't learn from someone like him then you are either already a landscape genius or you are not into landscapes at all!

This book is in hardback (not seen it in paperback but could be) and is a practical guide to the essential techniques of good landscape work.

The pictures 150 of them, are all well chosen to illustrate the points he makes throughout the book, often two pictures side by side showing the effect of the techniques he is talking about.

He tends to mix practical tips with inspiring ideas that he has picked up over the years, something that comes across really well here. I don't want to learn just the practical technical theory but also the real-world application of those ideas along with pictures that demonstrate how well they work. You will certainly get that here in abundance.

As with another book I have reviewed, the age of this book is irrelevant. It is a classic book that is read by many an aspiring landscape photographer trying to learn his craft and whether you work digitally or with film makes little difference when it comes to visualising a good picture and composing the shot well.

As with most of this kind of book, it's one you'll want on your shelf to dip into again and again. But beware, if you are a member of a camera club and they find it you have it, you'll be permanently lending it out to everyone!

Cheers,
Rob

Pros: Inspiring
Cons:

I read this book early on when I began learning photography. I'd read a few text books and absorbed a lot of technical information. This book was different - a refreshing change from all the other books I saw on the shelf. It is more a 'picture book' than a 'text book'. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of information in it for budding photographers, but it contains that important ingredient which text books lack ... full-page examples of the author's own work. And we can all learn from Charlie Waite, his work is outstanding.

If you're serious about getting somewhere with your photography, one piece of advice which is often given, and which I totally agree with, is to study the masters. And who better than Charlie Waite, a world renowned landscape photographer who offers inspiration in this wonderful book brimming with beautiful photographs. In between text books, pick this book up for a visual session of inspiration.

I borrowed this book from the library, so I didn't add a price. But trust me, it's worth buying ... in fact it's a little while ago since I read it, so I just might go seek it out again ... which goes to show what an impression the book made upon me.

My advice? Get it!
