Description: The best choice for DSLR or for lightweight camcorders. Recommended for 200mm lens, up to 300mm maximum. Series 2 offers an excellent maximum load capacity and very good torsional rigidity. Weight and size are still convenient for travelling or trekking. Available in 3- and 4-section models at standard and compact heights. Series 2 is the ideal solution for photographers that are looking for a solid and yet lightweight tripod.

The aluminium Explorer G2220 is the entry level in the Explorer range. It offers the unsurpassed versatility and creativity of the Explorer family at a affordable price. It is the ideal tool for photography students that want to explore new and original shooting perspectives. It comes with pre-installed stainless steel spike feet protected by removable rubber covers-feet (Gitzo accessory code G1220.129B3). The aluminium leg tubes feature Anti Leg Rotation for a quick set up and a precise length adjustment in any condition and position. It is recommended for a wide variety of photography styles and applications, including reproduction, macro, still life, architectural, advertising, original bottom up shoots and to be used in small and inaccessible places.

ALR - We have introduced a new Anti Leg Rotation system, which means the tripod can be opened in less than 15 seconds. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually.

DOUBLE QUICK RELEASE SAFETY SYSTEM - The system consists of two pins, one fixed and one manually operated by means of a button, that prevent camera equipment from suddenly dropping out of the head when the quick release locking knob is released. Extremely useful with heavy equipment, long lenses and spotting scopes.

SEPARATE FRICTION CONTROL - By fine tuning the freedom of movement of the head, friction control makes the head slower and more precise or faster and looser. This feature also helps to make using heavy equipment or long lenses safer. On ball and fluid head models without separate friction controls, slowly adjusting the lock knobs gives similar results.

G-LOCKG-Lock is the new Gitzo leg locking system. The locking mechanism has been completely redesigned in order to achieve a 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation and stronger, safer locking. G-Lock’s special design also provides a “gravity lock” effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock.

GROUND LEVEL SETThis new feature allows you to remove the center column to save weight and get the camera closer to the ground. Uses existing components: the upper disc with reversible 1/4 - 3/8 bolt and the column hook assembly: Remove column and fix the disk directly to the upper casting using the column hook. No tools needed.

HOOKThis built-in accessory allows you to hang a stabilizingweight (e.g. a full camera bag or a sand/water bag) fromthe bottom of the tripod center column. Useful with longheavy lenses, on uneven ground or in windy conditions.

LEG ENDSAll tripods and monopods in Series 1 and above are provided with removable rubber feet. This feature allows you to easily change worn out rubber feet or to fit other accessories, such as spiked feet or snow/sand shoes. (4 sections tripods in Series 1 are excluded because the final leg section is too narrow to fit these ends).

LEVELLING BUBBLEThe levelling bubble helps you to get your photographs, film or scope viewing perfectly horizontal or vertical. Gitzo’s production staff set all levelling bubbles by hand in order to ensure 100% accurate level indication.

RAPID COLUMNThe center column locking collar above the tripod shoulder makes it easier to adjust the column quickly. Series 1 and above are built with an anti-rotation grooved center column for improved stability.

REVERSIBLE COLUMNThe rapid column can easily be inverted for an alternative shooting angle or low level macro work.

REVERSIBLE HANDLESHandles can removed and repositioned or rotated in different positions. This feature greatly increases a head’s versatility and is particularly appreciated by left handed users.

SAFE GRIPSafe Grip is a material that gives a safer lock between your camera and the head plate, preventing the camera from moving or slipping. It is used on quick release plates and in applications where the camera equipment is screwed to the support to reduce pivoting and twisting.

SAFE LOCKSafe Lock is a special techno polymer that maximises locking torque and equipment stabilisation. It is used on the upper discs of tripods and heads, and in applications where the equipment is rotated and screwed onto the support to eliminate micro movements and vibration.

SEPARATE PAN CONTROLWhen using a ball head, the ability to lock and unlock the panoramic movement independent of front-back or lateral tilt movements is convenient for panoramic photography and when a high level of control is required.

FRICTION CONTROL By fine tuning the freedom of movement of the head, friction control makes the head slower and more precise or faster and looser. This feature also helps to make using heavy equipment or long lenses safer. On ball and fluid head models without separate friction controls, slowly adjusting the lock knobs gives similar results.

Pros: versatility
Cons: should also come with a short centre column

The g2220 is a jack of all trades tripod good enough to use as a landscape tripod and excellent for macro. For landscape use it`s sturdy if a little fiddly at first as the legs have no stops for setting angles, just place them manualy until you get the position you want. Fully extended I don`t need to use the centre column, At 5ft 8 I just need to stoop a little to the view finder. Although the legs can be splayed out to get very low to the ground the centre column as to be moved around until it is horizontal to get really low, I have made my own stubby centre column to get around this. Macro photography is where this tripod shines, able to get into nearly any position you would want. The only problem being the cameras viewfinder may be out of reach. The only reason I gave it a nine rating and not ten is the centre column prevent it getting really low without having to move it horizontally.
