Pros: Perfectly balanced and comfortable to use.
Cons: None so far

My old workhors on my D2X was my 17-55mm DX lens; it was quite simply the one lens that I wouldn't leave the house without it being in my bag. Covering a range equivalent to 25.5 - 82.5mm on 35mm film, there wasn't much that it couldn't handle.

Now that I'm using D3 bodies, in steps Nikon's new 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Doing an on-paper comparison with the 17-55, it yields a little extra width when shooting wide but you lose a bit of 'reach' at the far end. In reality, the differences are so slight as to be not worth mentioning.

Bokeh, colour and contrast on this lens are all outstanding - as you would expect. Edge-to-edge sharpness is also first class when shooting on a D3, and there's no apparent vignetting either in the viewfinder or on images unless you're pulled right back to the 24mm point... but, even then, it is mild and only visible when shooting wide open.

Setting the zoom range aside, one area in which the 24-70 lens excels is in is how resistant to flare and ghosting it is. The 17-55DX lens flared like an atomic bomb if you had bright light sources either in or just outside the frame... I had some shots rendered nearly unusable on account of the flare on the DX lens.

Not so with the 24-70. I took a grab shot of UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva jumping atop the cageside to celebrate his win over Keith Jardine at UFC 84. The arena lights were plainly in shot and, had I been using the DX lens, it would have been killed by flare and ghosting. The 24-70 handled the shot without any issues - take a look at shot #15 in this link http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/flash...leryId=3413135 - but ignore the incorrect white balance!

Pros: Image and build quality handling
Cons: No VR

For me this is the ideal standard lens length on an FX camera and also a great portrait lens on a DX body. It's pretty hefty but balances nicely on the D3 or D300 with grip and handles very well if you are used to Nikon 2 ring zooms. The zoom ring has a bit more meat compared to the 17-55 which is welcome if, like me, you are an occasional finger roller. This and the focus ring are smooth to operate and grit free. It comes with the, now obligatory, bayonet mount petal hood which does a good job of shading and also protecting the front element which looks pretty exposed without it at certain focal lengths. It's weather sealed as you'd expect from a pro lens and looks and feels very well made. Unlike the 17-55 it comes in it's own soft case like a scaled down 70-200 one which handily is the same size as the one for the 14-24 so may actual get some use.

Optically it's very good, marginally better than the 17-55 and the Nano coating I first saw on the 300 continues to impress in tricky lighting and controlling CA. Focusing is rapid, silent and accurate and distortion is minor and what there is easy to deal with.

I am very happy with what I have seen so far but I have docked it a point for not having VR. It's occasionally an issue on the D3 but a lot of these will be used on crop bodies and that adds to the case for VR. It will still sell like hot cakes and it deserves to.
