Lets get straight to the point, this is a great printer. I previously had a canon i9950. The step up in quality has to be seen to be believed.
Size
Its big. Its heavy, it weighs about 18kg or 44lbs, so dont go carrying it around the house for half an hour. Dimensions:684mm(W) x 376mm(D) x 257mm(H)
Inks
9 ink cartridges....or tanks really as they hold 80mls of Ink. The ink is Epson K3 Ultrachrome, a fantastic pigment based ink that gives true archival results. I have printed around 450 pictures before any of the cartridges had to be replaced ($100 each). Has a photo black and a matte black, a small quantity of ink is wasted when swapping between the two due to a shared line to the print head. I mostly use the matte black as it tends to give more shadow detail on my chosen media.
Print Quality
Superb. It almost rivals the Epson 9600 in my opinion for colour reproduction. The black and white results leaves the 9600 for dead....great for all those mono fans!! Some may say why bother investing in a printer like this unless your doing a lot of prints...I thought exactly the same before I bought this. After winning a couple of photographic comps, other local photographers in the area are now bringing their work to me for a one on one print experience I suppose you could call it. It has more than paid for itself, the extra income from other photographers has ensured that.
Gripes
*Not a big fan of the LCD interface on the printer. Being lazy I would prefer to alter functions via a screen prompt. (but thats just me)
*No paper roll holder (would be handy though not essential)
*Some striking with thicker media (striking is where print head comes in contact with the edges of the media and leaves small deposits of ink), although has a platen gap adjustment for thicker media is a bit of a guessing game.
*user manual electronic not hard copy.
Overall
I am normally a hard task master. A product has to be perfect to warrant a 10. The Epson 3800 is I think the best printer by a long way in this price bracket, and even hits a few of its bigger more expensive cousins for six like the 9600 if you were to compare running costs and output. 99 out of 100 people would no doubt give this printer a 10. It gives spectacular results using Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Crane Silver Rag. The lack of a paper roll holder or even a detachable one In my opinion brings the printer down to a 9 overall. If the review was just based on output results then a 10 would definately be in order for this baby.
