Like many I have too many camera bags. I hope they all perform a specific task but I still have too many. This is the latest and was bought after a few recent non photographic trips where I needed to carry a laptop, camera gear and general kit. It needed to be carry on friendly, and also double as a general purpose bag. It also would help a lot if it was easy to carry, provided easy access whilst on the back and I always like bags that don’t look like camera bags.

I have a Lowepro slingshot and find for one body it’s a great easy access bag but looks like a camera bag and has no where for the laptop. I chose the Fastpack as I hoped it would suit my needs being a 2 strap backpack equivalent of the slingshot with added laptop storage. It comes in red and blue as well as black, the blue and red look like a conventional backpack more than a camera bag.
This in fact has less emphasis on the camera storage and adds more flexible additional storage than the Slingshot. It has sufficient depth for a pro SLR body with a decent 2.8 standard zoom but it’s a bit tight for the hood. The lens storage will again hold a 70-200 but without hood and it’s still really a bit tight. It has lots of room for a 70-300. For my trips I have been putting a D300 with a 17-55, 70-300, 11-16 and an SB800. This still leaves room for another small lens or accessories in the camera section. It also has memory card storage in the lid. It is well padded and can be configured to suit but the positioning of the Velcro is not as versatile as say the slingshot. This, like the Slingshot, can be partially opened by swinging it around to the front to access the camera and the lens compartments. The compartment is fully opened by unclipping a cover. The cover also hides a zip compartment that has pockets suitable for filters and can hold small odds and ends. On the outside there is a very useful water bottle mesh pocket that was missing from the slingshot.

The upper main compartment is plenty big enough for power supplies chargers a book, small umbrella and a jacket and has pockets for pens, disks, card readers mobile phones etc. together with a pen clip. It comes with a Velcro in zip pouch for cables etc that I personally don’t use. Additionally there is an external zip pocket which is useful for documents and anything you want easy access to. Finally running underneath the back is a full length zip that is for a laptop up to 17” and can also hold A4 or larger folders or papers. When I get a day for shooting another plus is that it holds my travelling tripod (Cullman Magic 2)

As an actual rucksack it’s comfortable enough to wear with a hip belt to help distribute the load. On the shoulder strap and on the hip belt there are loops that can be used with the Lowepro sliplock cases. It has a grab handle at the top You swivel on one shoulder strap to access the camera body and you can just about access and change lenses but it’s not as stable a platform as the slingshot when you are doing this. It has no AW cover but it can stand a good shower. It’s hand luggage friendly but can be quite bulky when full.
Overall if you want a general purpose/camera/laptop bag that’s discreet it’s a pretty good compromise. I also like the easy access whilst it’s on my back. The only downsides are that it’s really too tight a squeeze for a pro 70-200, there is no strap for a full sized tripod and no weatherproof cover.
