Description:
|
A convenient wideangle zoom lens with high quality optics for use with the Nikon DX Format Digital SLRs. The ample 18-55mm zoom range is equivalent to a 27-82.5mm lens in 35mm format. This lens offers maximum versatility to accommodate tight portraits or expansive landscapes.
Key Features
1. Popular zoom range coverage from 18 to 55mm (35mm equivalent: 27-82.5mm)
2. Exceptionally high optical performance designed specifically for use with Nikon digital SLR sensors
3. An ED glass element minimises chromatic aberration with higher resolution and superior contrast
4. Nikon's exclusive SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for whisper quiet and fast Autofocus.
5. Outstanding cost performance

Ok before you start believing anything I say in this review, you should know I've dropped this lens (and camera) while it was on the tripod - the tripod legs where closed and it was leaning against a bench. When I stood up the tripod fell over. This did break the lens (albeit temporarily) Doh!
1) Focus Speed.
This thing is very quick to focus.
2) Focus Noise
It's so quiet I can't actually hear it. But as this lens is unlikely to be used where noise matters, e.g. wildlife photography, so the lack of focusing sound isn't particularly relevant.
3) Image Sharpness
I haven't noticed any issues with softness at all.

All these shots are 100% crops taken at 18mm. I can't see any difference between them
4) Barrel Distortion.
This is definately a problem with this lens at the 18mm end. It's easy enough to fix in post processing but annoying none the less. If you require straight lines without any post processing then avoid this lens.

This is a full frame shot resized down. You can clearly see the barrel distortion on the pillar
5) Chromatic Abberation (Purple Fringing)
This lens also suffers a bit from this at the edges of the image on high contrast areas. Again this can be fixed in post processing but that is less than ideal.

Here you can see the chromatic abberation. This is a 100% crop
6) Build Quality
Well as I said, I dropped it and it promptly broke. It was dropped onto hard packed earth from about 2 feet. It didn't drop straight down it dropped in a 2 foot arc.
There is no external mark on the lens however the internal mechanics that handle the zoom broke - or jumped out of place.
Luckily about two hours patient fiddling got it working again - although not quite as good as new.
So while it's definately not as strong as a metal + glass lens, it is a surprisingly tough little fella given it's almost 100% plastic!
Summary
This is by far my sharpest lens in my bag - which isn't saying much but I'm delighted by the performance of it. I use it for many different types of shot, from portraits & landscapes to interiors and product shots.
The problems displayed above are not insurmountable and if you'd prefer to spend time rather than money then this is a nice little lens.

Pros:
|
Close and Fast Focus, Inexpensive, it's sharp
|
|
Cons:
|
it's mostly plastic, Out of production
|
|
It's no longer in production so you will have to get a 18-55mm II(the II was introduced with the D40 and its basically the same it's just a little more improved in the AF-S motor, it will focus faster and more accurately) ,I did like the fact that it focuses at 11" (.28m) and it is very quiet.
The barrel extends about a half inch at maximum, I also did some test for sharpness and found that f/8 was the sharpest point.
It comes with a pinch-front Lens cap.
so Overall for that price There should be no complaints , use it for all the 5 YEAR Warranty is worth.
Aperture Range: f/3.5 - 22 at 18mm - f/5.6 - 36 at 55 mm.
Filter Thread: 52 mm
Bayonet Hood: HB-33 (not included)
Marked focal lengths: 18, 24, 35, 45 and 55 mm
