Description: Nikon’s first FX format camera to feature high-definition movie recording offers photographers a whole new level of creative flexibility. The D3S features a highly sensitive 12.1 megapixel FX format CMOS sensor that boasts an ISO range of 200 to 12800. The D-movie function offers superior movie capture in stereo* sound and features a Save Selected frame option to speed up productivity. Nikon’s acclaimed 51-point AF system offers high sensitivity in low-light and superb performance when tracking fast moving subjects.

An advanced image sensor cleaning function reduces the impact of dust spots and three alternative crop modes enhance shooting flexibility. The EXPEED image processing engine and expansive buffer enables you to shoot up to 9 fps for extended bursts. Protected by a tough, environmentally-sealed magnesium alloy body, the D3S redraws the boundaries for professional action photography.

Pros: Build quality, High ISO handling nice evolution.
Cons: Af points don't cover enough of the frame, video is only 720p.

I have had this for a good few months but forgot to write a review. This is an update on the D3 with a few tweaks and new sensor. There is no D3 just this and the D3X (Which I also have and shall be reviewing shortly). The D3s goes for speed and low noise high ISO keeping the adequate for almost everything 12Mp, The D3x goes for more detail at low ISO and a higher pixel count. Everything I wrote about the D3 applies equally to this so I will just concentrate on the improvements.
1. The Sensor. It's as good as the D3 at ISO 100-800 but above that it's amazing. It retains detail but keeps noise at a really low level. Worth the upgrade for that alone.
2. It has a dedicated live view button and much much better liveview AF performance. This means that it it's much easier to use live view with the different frame advance modes and self timer and it's more useful. All of this is a by product of the . . .
3. Video mode (720p) which is accessed whilst in live view. You can AF during shooting and it produces decent videos and it's occasionally fun. My D300s gets more use. It can take an external mike but I haven't used one so have no idea how good that is. For professional video work the Canon 5d mkII is apparently the SLR of choice.
4. Silent mode, thsi takes the place of live view on the shooting dial All I can say is it's quieter but definitely not silent. It might help in some limited situations but I haven't used it other than to play with.
I think there are some other minor tweaks but these are the ones that mattered to me in order. I have replaced both my D3 s with these as the sensor means you can be far more flexible. Not just shooting in low light but stopping down lenses, getting the highest shutter speeds and allowing flash shooting out to very long range.
