This is Sony's version of the Tamron 55-200 4-5.6 with the changes being mostly cosmetic, though it does have a much more usable focus ring.
For an occasional telephoto user this is a good choice - it is very compact and lightweight and it is cheap (though the Tamron version is cheaper still.) It's mostly made of plastic, including the mount, but feels solid enough.
Performance is excellent for the price - not up to the levels of those nice expensive 70-200's but certainly better than the cheap 70-300's out there. The lens is acceptably sharp right out to 160/170 when it does start to get a little soft. It's also worth noting that it hold its f4 aperture out to 135 and only hits f5.6 at 160.
Generally if money is tight or if you are only an occasional telephoto user this is a good choice. For users of other cameras the Tamron version is broadly identical in performance and is available in a variety of mounts.
Note: This review refers to the older version of this lens. A newer version is now available with a lens based focus motor. Reviews I have read suggest the performance of this version is similar.
