I am a wedding photographer. After extensive research I decided on the Canon-mount Sigma 17-70. I have never regretted it. I have shot with the Canon 17-40L and the 17-85 IS and neither worked for me. The 17-40L is razor sharp but doesn't have the range I need. The 17-85 IS has the IS and the range but I wasn't impressed with IQ and there was distortion at the wide end and a ton of purple fringing--a no-no for wedding photographer who pretty much shoots white on black all day.
The Sigma 17-70 has the perfect range, is very sharp once you get to 6.3 or 7.1 and quite acceptably sharp at 2.8, and the price is right.
I would love a 2.8 aperture throughout the focal length but at this price and range, that's too much to ask.
The build quality is less than perfect, the zoom loosens after a while and drops down when hanging around my neck.
The lens cap doesn't play well with the hood but hey, at least it CAME with a hood (Canon, you cheap *******s.) and fortunately Nikon sells its lens caps separately.
I love this lens. I rarely, if ever, take it off.
It is bar-none the most versatile walk-around lens for the money. I highly recommend it.

I use this for portraits and a walk around lens.
It is lightweight and ideal for general use.
Good close focus capability.
It is also compatible with DxO Pro for raw conversion.
