Description:

With the large maximum aperture, excellent background blur is possible even with a fast shutter speed
The large maximum aperture makes excellent background blur possible even with a fast shutter speed. The aspherical lens element makes the lens compact and corrects spherical aberrations.
The image is sharp even at the edges.

Left price blank as it was an ebay purchase for a ridiculously low £170.
I figured this would make an excellent standard lens on a 20D so duly bought it. The lens appears very much like the 50mm f1.4 and other mid range Canon lenses. Solidly built with a DOF Scale, non rotating front element, very nice outwardly.
I'm not sure why Canon made this an f1.8 lens. Whereas say the 50mm f1.8 is perfectly usable at that aperture, this lens is not. Which is all the more surprising as you'd expect a shorter focal length lens to have an appreciably larger depth of field.
Photographs at apertures greater than f2.8 were disappointing at the periphery although this improved very much with decreasing aperture. Images needed a fair bit of adjustment to get satisfactory contrast. Compared to images from the Sigma 30mm f1.4 this was not up to scratch.
Perhaps I just got a duff copy but aside from the build and the good performance when stopped down, I think it would be wiser to save money and go for the 28mm f2.8
